According to Hearing Components, their new Comply NR-10 Earphones can deliver more than 48 decibels of noise reduction using the same technology enjoyed by the US Army and Special Forces. They were also designed to “maximize bass response and deliver superior sound quality.” At $80, it would seem like a decent value—if they worked. Fortunately, the folks at iLounge took them for a spin and weighed the pros and cons. Read the rest of this entry »

Here’s a t-shirt which will not only protect you from the winter chills, but will literally guard you from any impending dangers.

Chuo Ward, Osaka-based uniform manufacturing company Nihon Uni has developed a t-shirt which apparently safeguards the people wearing it from knives. The ever-increasing rate of malicious crimes that have victimized children and late-night convenience store clerks surely makes this t-shirt sound like quite a blessing in disguise.

The fiber used in this special t-shirt is three times stronger as cotton. The strength of the Nihon Uni’s t-shirt made from ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene fiber equates to aramid fiber used in body armor.

Though the t-shirt seems tough, it’s extremely lightweight and thus is machine-washable. Its mesh fabric can be punctured by a sharp point.

There are two styles available – a short-sleeved one and a long-sleeved one. While the short-sleeved version of the T-shirt costs 19,000-52,000 yen ($190-522), the long-sleeved pick ranges from 22,000-59,000 yen ($220-590). No points for guessing, the protective t-shirt from Nihon Uni will hit store shelves across the Japanese market in June. What can we say, some people have all the luck!

Myka + BitTorrent = TorrentTV

myka-torrent.jpg

The Myka is what many Torrent fans have been waiting for—a device that makes it easy to download torrents and play them on your living room TV. You can connect to the internet via LAN or WiFi, it has HDMI, Composite, S-Video and SPDIF ports (nice), your choice of 80, 160 or 500 gigabytes (and USB expansion) and the Linux OS with pre-installed BitTorrent software. You can even transfer videos directly from your computer. Prices are going to fall between $299 and $459, which is more than the Apple TV, but something tells me that there is some built-in value there

If you want to pre-order this box go to http://www.myka.tv/pre_order.html

iPhone Firmware 2.0 hands on

We know there have been a couple of crappy videos here and there on the web, but we finally got our own grubby paws on the yet-to-be released iPhone 2.0 beta, which isn’t officially due until this June. It isn’t exactly awash with changes, but here’s what you need to know:

  • Exchange is so on! Changes are pushed over the network, but over WiFi it does check-ins, so it’s not as instantaneous.
  • There’s no contact search that we can see, so far. Maybe that only gets turned on if you have thousands of contacts (which we definitely do not).
  • There’s a new button in the calendar, but we don’t know what it is and can’t make it do anything.
  • The App Store is there, of course, but doesn’t do anything yet (except error out that it can’t connect).
  • Wondering when Apple will make good on its agreement to license Cisco technology? Well, the branded Cisco VPN screen has definitely been added to the VPN settings. We couldn’t really test this one, but assume it works as advertised. We don’t yet know if it supports SecurID or other hardware token authenticators.
  • Parental controls most certainly work. Marvel as we turn off YouTube!
  • You can now order your preferred WiFi networks.
  • In addition to having a new sideways scientific mode(!), the basic calculator now does commas and has new, useful functions for the math nerds; both the calc and the iTunes icons have changed.
  • By far our favorite new feature is multi-select in mail, though. Now when you hit edit you can select as many messages as you want and delete or move them as a group. Friggin’ finally. Now where’s that two-pane client?

Definitely encouraging stuff in here. We’ll have some video up of this thing a little later; in the mean time, there anything you want to know? Big ups to our source(s) for hooking us up with this!

This is just getting silly, don’t you think? The iPhone Dev Team has once again proven their totally gnarly talents by freeing up the latest firmware before it’s even the latest firmware. Apple, here’s our suggestion — just let people do what they want with your devices, since they’re clearly going to do it anyway. That way, instead of making enemies, you’re making lifelong buddies. Reasonable, right? Steve, give us a call, we’re more than happy to riff on some ideas for playing nice with the end-user

Update: Dev chat room chatter claims that the 2.0 is now fully unlocked as well.
